Basant, Laxmi adjudged best judokas in State meet

Basant Dalei of Bhubaneswar Judo Association and Laxmi Sodi of Malkangiri Districts Judo Association won the titles as the best man and woman competitor of the Odisha State Judo Championship, which was organized by Odisha State Judo Association (OSJA) here at KIIT University campus on October 1 and 2, 2016.

According to an OSJA press release, more than 400 judokas from 20 districts and two affiliated units participated in the championship. Bhubaneswar Judo Association bagged the team title, while the runners-up trophy went to Sambalpur District Judo Association.

The championship featured completion for boys and girls in cadet, sub-junior, junior categories and that for men and women. But results in details were not disclosed by OSJA. However, the state judo body announced that a 27-member Odisha squad had been selected for participation in the Sub-Junior National Judo Championship, scheduled to be held at Pataliputra Sports Complex, Patna, Bihar from October 13 to 17. But the names of the squad members were not revealed.

It can be mentioned that OSJA is being controlled by Priyabrat Patnaik and Gitanjali Panda as president and chief executive officer respectively. Purna Chandra Mishra assumed responsibily as the general secretary earlier this year. But judo in Odisha is yet to regain the importance and popularity, created by eminent coach Biranchi Das, who was killed in April 2008.
